Singer argues that... He says... He believes..."?
❌ "In this article, Singer argues that we have a moral obligation to donate to effective charities. He uses the drowning child analogy. I agree with his argument because it shows how distance is morally irrelevant." ✅ "Singer's drowning-child analogy smuggles in an unstated premise: that physical proximity is what activates moral duty. If that premise holds, then distance does become irrelevant. But Singer himself concedes that we need not maximize donations — he sets a 10 percent threshold. This means his own argument undermines the very principle the analogy was meant to establish."
❌ "The author's argument about potential personhood is not very convincing. I disagree because some people might not want to do that." ✅ "Franklin's framework treats fetal potential as morally equivalent to actual personhood. But she never specifies where 'potential' transitions into 'actual' — which means her criterion cannot distinguish a six-cell embryo from a sperm cell without importing an assumption she never defends."
❌ "It seems like there might be some potential issues with the utilitarian framework presented in Mill's Chapter 2, and it could perhaps be argued that justice is treated too simplistically." ✅ "Mill's attempt to reduce justice to a subset of utility fails at its own hinge: a 'just verdict' has independent normative force precisely because it does not track aggregate welfare. If it did, Mill's defense of individual rights becomes incoherent."
I'm not sure whether X is right, but here's what happens if we push it to Y"——这比任何看起来像正确结论的段落都更有分析价值。
