As a Chinese student based in the UK, my cultural background may influence my interpretation of the data.'

看这组对比——❌ 'As a Chinese student, I may have a different perspective on Western counseling practices.' ✅ 'In my third interview, I kept steering the conversation toward family expectations. When Chen told me her mother had never once asked how I was doing, I realized I was projecting my own household dynamics onto every participant. I stopped asking about family the next week. That was the only time my data got sharper.'

❌ 'I tried to remain as objective as possible and minimize my personal biases throughout the research.' ✅ 'I can't be objective. I grew up in a household where asking for help meant weakness. When participant 4 said I just deal with things myself, I felt a pull to nod — I recognized myself. I flagged that moment in my field notes and asked: am I hearing what's there, or what I want to hear?'

❌ 'My position as a female researcher may have affected how participants opened up.' ✅ 'Three participants — all men — told me they felt instructing me, as if my gender made me the junior in the room. I'd assumed my gender would make them more forthcoming, not more performative. I re-listened to two of those recordings with this in mind. The tone was completely different.'

As a [country] student, my background may...'
