Your AI Draft Is Given Away by Politeness, Not Grammar
'It is important to note' isn't academic humility — it's an AI tell. Deleting it beats any other revision step for sounding human.
A student sent me a paper last week that had been returned by their supervisor with a single annotation at the top of the first page: 'AI.' No other feedback. No comments on content, no notes on structure, no grammar corrections. Just that one word, underlined twice. I asked the student what tool they used to draft the paper. They said one AI, no editing after. The draft was clean — subject-verb agreement perfect, transitions smooth, citations formatted correctly in APA. So how did the supervisor know? I opened the file. Hit Ctrl+F. Searched 'it is important to note.' Seven hits. Searched 'it should be mentioned.' Four hits. Searched 'it is worth noting.' Two hits. Thirteen filler openers in a two-thousand-word paper. The supervisor didn't run a detector. They read the first paragraph. That was enough.
These phrases are not harmful because they are wordy. Wordiness is a surface-level complaint, the kind that gets taught in year one and then quietly abandoned by working writers. The real damage is structural. 'It is important to note' announces — before you state your own point — that the reader should pay attention. Why would you need to tell a reader that what you are about to say is important? If you have done your job correctly, the reader already knows it matters, because you selected it from your research and placed it in your argument. The phrase exists only because the writer does not trust their own authority. It is a hedge, but not a hedge of certainty — a hedge of self-confidence. And self-doubt at the sentence level is what machines produce when they have no stake in the claim.
Run a Ctrl+F against your own draft right now. You will find at least one. ❌ It is important to note that the correlation between urban green space and mental health outcomes remains significant after controlling for income and education level. ✅ The correlation between urban green space and mental health outcomes remains significant after controlling for income and education level. ❌ It should be mentioned that this study relies primarily on self-reported survey data, which introduces the potential for recall bias among lower socioeconomic participants. ✅ This study relies on self-reported survey data, introducing potential recall bias among lower socioeconomic participants. ❌ It is worth noting that the proposed analytical framework draws heavily on insights from both behavioral economics and social psychology, rather than any single disciplinary tradition. ✅ The proposed analytical framework draws on behavioral economics and social psychology, rather than any single disciplinary tradition. Notice what is lost in each rewrite. Nothing. Not a single unit of information disappears. The sentence is just shorter, faster, and more authoritative. That is the entire point.
Some instructors will defend these constructions as hedging, and students who have been trained to hedge everything in academic English sometimes push back: 'My supervisor told me to qualify my claims.' Listen carefully to what was actually said. Real hedging operates on the certainty level of the claim. 'This evidence suggests' is weaker than 'this evidence demonstrates.' 'It may be that' is weaker than 'it is.' 'The findings tentatively indicate' is weaker than 'the findings indicate.' Those phrases adjust the confidence interval around your claim. 'It is important to note' adjusts nothing. Delete it and the claim is identical. It does not soften, does not qualify, does not hedge. It just announces. And announcement is not argumentation. If you want to sound cautious, modify what you assert. If you want to sound like a machine that is being careful about being careful, write 'it is important to note.'
Now here is the part that affects your actual grade right now: detection tools are pattern-matchers before they are anything else. They do not understand prose. They measure distributional statistics. 'It is important to note' appears in approximately 3% of human-written academic prose and close to 22% of AI-generated academic prose. That gap exists because large language models were trained on corpora where the phrase appeared at elevated frequency in the formal-register samples, and they reproduce it at a rate that exceeds what any human writer produces naturally. Every time you write it, you are adding a positive data point to the detector's score. One instance might not trigger a flag. Five will. Ten will guarantee a score above 80% on most commercial detectors. You did not write something that sounds like AI. You wrote the exact phrase that the detector was trained to look for.
I do not delete these by hand anymore. I paste the full draft into easydue and let it strip empty sentence-openers while keeping genuine hedges, qualifiers, and concessive clauses that actually carry meaning. What I do with the saved time is the part that earns marks: I check whether every claim has a supporting evidence chain, whether each topic sentence advances the argument or merely restates the thesis, and whether my paragraph transitions are logical rather than decorative. That is revision. Replacing 'it is important to note' with 'it is crucial to recognize' or 'it is essential to understand' is not revision. It is synonym-swapping inside a sentence that should not exist. The detector still sees the pattern. The supervisor still sees the posture. You just moved the furniture to a different corner of the same empty room.
Here is the line worth keeping in your writing process permanently: authority in academic prose comes from the act of asserting, not from the act of announcing that you are about to assert. The moment you write 'it is important to note,' you have stepped outside your own voice and become a tour guide pointing at something you found interesting. You do not need to point. You already placed it there. Delete every 'it is important to note,' every 'it should be mentioned,' every 'it is worth discussing,' and watch what happens. Your paper gets ten percent shorter. The removed material was never your thinking. It was the machine breathing in, pretending to be a scholar, and you were letting it borrow your sentence.
